Day III

Task: Explore and embody movement and postures inspired by the shape and structure of the old heaters and the shape of the iron design on the window that Hala was inspired by.

We started off directly embodying the structure, then added the element of the story, the past, what lies beyond the solid material. Added the layer of mirroring, the use of repetition, and changing levels.

Mona: “I enjoyed finding the same movements between me and Hala, but each with our quality and pace. I enjoyed the moments where one body was silent or still which gave space to the other body to expand, exaggerate. I liked the wavey movement of Hala’s fingers and was inspired to use it. The mirroring moments work, especially when there is a nuance of difference between them. Loved the moments of stillness in Hala, where she stops, and I can almost see the process of reception before she goes on to another movement. I enjoyed the lack of perfromativeness in those moments.

Hala: “ I enjoyed improvising and transforming something that is rigid and bringing life to the solid. The process of scaffolding. I was inspired by the asymmetrical shapes and structures and I could relate them to the design of my own body.”

Task: Trace the path of the walker in Cardiac Cycle path but with different coloured crayons.

Mona: “I could imagine the many possibilities of relaying this pathway on the floor in a site-specific space or virtually on a website, and fleshing out those stops or landmarks into more developed stations or works.”

Task: Copy the posture in the photo of Hala and Mona. Be mindful of the transitions between each pose.

Next layer: took out the photos and improvised the poses from memory.

Mona: “I found it useful to take away the photos and find new poses when I would do a gesture from a photo and Hala from another photo and it is almost like we are double exposing our memories, or our images of them.”
